Description
Jan Aushadhi Scheme – Affordable Medicines for All
Introduction
The Jan Aushadhi Scheme is a flagship initiative launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India. The objective is to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices, especially for the economically weaker sections and the middle class. These medicines are equivalent in quality, efficacy, and safety to expensive branded drugs, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to healthcare access.
Why Jan Aushadhi?
In India, branded medicines are often sold at high prices, making daily treatment unaffordable for a large section of the population. The Jan Aushadhi campaign breaks this pattern by:
- Making high-quality, WHO-GMP certified generic medicines available through dedicated Jan Aushadhi Stores (JAS).
- Educating the public and healthcare providers that brand name does not guarantee quality.
- Encouraging doctors to prescribe generic alternatives to expensive branded drugs.
Vision & Objective
To reduce the overall healthcare expenditure of Indian citizens by making affordable and quality medicines accessible to all, particularly the underprivileged and rural populations.
