๐ What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identification number issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is mandatory for individuals or businesses involved in the import or export of goods and services from India.
โ Lifetime Validity: IEC is issued once for a lifetime and does not require renewal, making it a one-time, hassle-free compliance.

IEC is not required under the following conditions:
- Government departments/agencies importing or exporting goods for defense or other listed purposes under the Foreign Trade (Regulation) Rules, 1993
- Individuals importing or exporting goods for personal use and not for trade, manufacturing, or agriculture
๐ RCMC Registration (Optional but Beneficial)
Once IEC is obtained, an exporter can apply for RCMC (Registration-Cum-Membership Certificate) from an Export Promotion Council (EPC) or Commodity Board, which is:
- Valid for 5 years
- Mandatory to avail export incentives and benefits under foreign trade policies
- Issued based on the exporterโs product category or industry type
